“Just Kids” is a poignant painting created with a group of 30 children, aged 5 to 14, from the Gaza Envelope, who survived the October 7th attack.
Initially, Tomer envisioned a bright and uplifting piece, starting with three happy faces and vibrant colors. However, within just 20 minutes, the kids chose to take a different path. They found darker colors around in the studio and even mixed paints to change the colors depicting more somber sentiments. One child painted a haunting image of a burnt baby, while another illustrated a helicopter shot down near their village that day, alongside rockets and missiles.
To enhance their powerful expressions, Tomer added realistic elements over their work, highlighting the depth of their experiences and emotions. The finished painting measures 69 x 77 inches and combines acrylic, spray paint, oil, and pastel, creating a layered narrative that speaks to both the innocence of childhood and the harsh realities they face.
