Super Hero was created by Tomer and a group of 20 bereaved children, aged 6 to 12, who lost a family member. The prompt given was “super hero,” as Tomer wanted to avoid directly addressing their trauma. Instead, he introduced the concept of a superhero, which encouraged the children to talk about and create representations of their personal heroes.
Most of the children compared an animated superhero to the father, brother, sister, or mother they had lost. For many, this was the first time they shared their stories about the loved ones they had lost. Tomer added the realistic elements of the painting to emphasize the children’s strength in opening up and honoring their loved ones, turning their personal grief into a powerful expression of resilience and memory.
